6 Tips to Make Leaf Raking a Breeze

Posted on October 20th, 2016

Show of hands — who absolutely can’t wait to get out there this weekend and start raking up those leaves? …That’s what we thought. Unfortunately, leaf raking is a necessary part of your duties as homeowners, and good old Mother Nature will keep them coming now through the remainder of the season. While there’s no way to get out of this dreaded task, there are a few convenient ways to help ease the burden. Here’s what we have in mind:

Tip 1: Use the lawn mower to your advantage.

You’re probably thinking, “wait a minute, I thought we were talking about raking leaves here?” We are! The first step to simplifying your raking duties is to make sure your lawn is in tip top shape. Mowing low and often will make it easier to glide the rake through and gather up the leaves for cleanup

Tip 2: Prep your body well.

Raking leaves is a real workout! Make sure you’ve eaten a hearty breakfast and have plenty of water to hydrate yourself throughout the day. We also recommend stretching beforehand. It might sound silly, but you wouldn’t lift weights or go for a run without stretching, would you?

Tip 3: Have the right tools.

There are so many amazing leaf raking tools out there! Make sure you choose the one that’s right for you. Perhaps a large tinged rake is your preference, or maybe you’d prefer a good old fashioned leaf blower. Whatever you decide, make sure you’re stocked, locked and loaded before you begin — that include trash bags for disposal!

Tip 4: Break it into sections.

Raking the entire lawn can be difficult and bad for your back, especially if you’ve got a large property to maintain. Instead, section out your lawn and tackle each area on a different day.

Tip 5: Never rake against the wind.

If it happens to be a windy day, allow the wind to assist. Raking in the direction the wind is going will make it easier for you to get your leaves from point A to point B. Plus, it will be less likely that a gust of wind will undo all your hard work.

Tip 6: Get the family involved.

There’s nothing like a fun, fall family day! If you’ve got a large family, why not put them to work. We’re sure the kids will enjoy bouncing around in the leaf piles and drinking warm cider all day. Who wouldn’t?
