It’s no doubt that this past winter took a toll on your lawn. With spring in full effect, it’s the perfect time to get out there and help the green grow once again. At Turf Unlimited, we know how important it is to have a healthy lawn, so we’ve compiled a list of spring lawn care tips to help you get your lawn back in shape this season.
Be gentle! Your grass is still recovering from the snowy season, so it’s important to be careful while you work. The soil is likely still densely saturated, and heavy yard work can compact soggy soil and damage fragile newly grown grass. Once you feel that the soil has dried out enough, go ahead and begin your spring cleaning overhaul, removing leaves and debris to make way for healthy new grass to grow.
Stop those weeds. Get a head start on those pesky weeds by laying down some pre-emergent herbicide. This will stop weed growth right in its tracks, saving you the headache of weeding down the road. Be sure to reapply the weed prevention product of your choice every three months or so for the best outcome.
Plant some seeds. Spring is the perfect time to fill up those bare spots in your lawn. However, pre-emergent herbicides will prevent grass seeds from sprouting, the way it prevents weeds from germinating. First, decide if you want to focus on regrowth or maintenance this season. If you choose to seed, be sure to identify the type of grass you wish to grow and plant accordingly. Cool-season grasses should be planted in 60 degree weather, while warm-season grasses should be planted in temperatures closer to 70 degrees. It is recommended that you plant for cool-season grasses in the fall rather than the spring, which means you can utilize the spring for weed prevention.
Fertilize! Similar to planting, fertilizing is also dependent on grass type. Since it is recommended that you plant cool-season grasses in the fall, you guessed it.. It’s recommended that you fertilize cool-season grasses in the fall as well. If you have warm-season grass you should fertilize in late spring for the greatest green potential!
It’s so wonderful to watch your landscape spring back to life as the weather warms up. Follow these tips and be sure to mow your lawn regularly to achieve that summer soft, green grass you’ll be dying to dig your toes into!
