Are you new to gardening or want to brush up on the best gardening practices? In order to have a healthy garden that flourishes like the ones in the magazines, you should know the proper way to water it. Knowing the right way to water your garden will provide you with the best results come the beginning of summer.
What Time You Should Water
The optimal time to water your garden (and lawn) is in the early morning between 4:00 am and 10:00 am. Watering in the middle of the day is not ideal because the sun and heat will quickly evaporate most of the water before it has a chance to be absorbed by the plants’ roots. Watering too late in the evening should only be done if there has been a recent drought. Otherwise, fungus and foliage diseases can begin to grow.
How Often You Should Water
Every plant will need to be watered differently, but you should still see if the soil is too dry or not. Pick up a handful of soil that’s at least six inches underground and squeeze it together. If you can’t create a small ball of soil that sticks together, it’s too dry and should be watered. When the soil isn’t sticking together, it means half of the available water in the soil is depleted and should be replenished.
How Much You Should Water
Again, you should always research the types of plants you have because some do require more or less water than others. For general purposes, you want to make sure the soil is wet for at least an entire foot. This will encourage the roots to grow deeper, which is needed for healthy growth and to endure droughts. Not watering enough at one time will cause roots to be shallow, resulting in them drying out more frequently.
In order for your garden to flourish this spring and summer, you want to make sure that you’re watering your garden the right way.
