Should I Water My Plants in the Winter?

Posted on December 22nd, 2016

Winter is here, plants are dormant, and the temperatures are awfully cold. Other than shoveling the driveway, your home’s property is the last thing you’re thinking of until spring arrives. However, you might want to rethink ignoring your plants for these next few months — you’d be surprised what a little water in the winter could do.

Will Water Kill My Plants?
First things first, your plants aren’t dead during the winter and still have some basic function in order for them to survive. With that being said, plant roots can easily dry out during the winter due to the lack of water they receive. When you water your plants, the water in the soil will actually draw surrounding heat to warm the plant.

When Do I Water My Plants?
You obviously don’t want to water your plants when there’s snow on the ground or during single digit temperatures. There are days during the winter when the temperatures are bearable and freezing temperatures aren’t occurring during the nighttime — choose these days. Try to water earlier in the day when the sun is already up to allow time for the roots to absorb the water.

How Much Water Do I Use?
The shocking amount of water that your plants need during the winter is… not that much (we know, surprising). Make sure you water the plants enough so it can penetrate the soil and reach the roots. You don’t have to water them every other day like in the spring and summer, but make sure you do this a few times per month.

Watering your plants in the winter sounds like an odd thing to do, but sometimes “you gotta do what you gotta do.”
