For anyone with a green thumb, sitting through winter without any form of gardening or property care is torture. Luckily, for all of the gardeners and landscapers out there, there are some winter maintenance tasks you can complete. Doing so will help your property prepare for healthy growth once spring arrives.
- Compost – For those who have compost heaps that have been sitting these last few months, go ahead and spread it across your garden (as long as there’s no snow). This natural mulch will improve your soil and lead to healthier pharmacy plants when the growing season starts.
- Water Bulbs – If you have any potted bulbs that are sitting on your window ledges or on your back deck, make sure you are watering them at least twice per week. If these bulbs are outside in the cold, avoid watering them during freezing temperatures and when frost is present.
- Prune Rose Bushes – Winter is the perfect time to prune your dormant rose bushes. Make sure you make a clear, angled cut right above the bud and remove any dead branches from the bush. To keep the base of the bush safe from harsh winds and heavy snowfall, secure it with twine or a wired fence.
- Plan for Spring – The best part about winter is letting your imagination roam free with all of your ideas for spring! Envision the garden you would like to care for, do your research on which plants you would like to have, and make all of your seed purchases. This way you’ll have a good portion of your garden ready to go for when spring rears its beautiful face!
Garden maintenance doesn’t just happen in spring, summer, and fall — there are things you can do to your garden in the middle of January as well!
