Protecting Your Artificial Grass – ‘We Keep It Green’ as we like to say at Turf Unlimited. Changing climates means changing with the times. As our customers wish to enjoy the benefits of artificial grass, we do our best to keep it green – in more ways than one. We wanted to take some time to share with you the benefits of artificial grass and what you need to do in terms of synthetic turf protection should you choose to go that route.
Artificial grass is ‘tufted’ in the same way in which carpets are made. It consists of three main ingredients: Polyethylene, Polypropylene, and Nylon. These synthetic materials are UV ray-resistant and resistant to wear and tear – while also being soft to the touch.
Artificial grass has been around since the 1960s, first gaining worldwide attention when Houston’s Astrodome needed a solution for its playing field. This was because the adverse environmental conditions simply didn’t allow for grass to grow well enough – and painting the dirt patches green just wasn’t cutting it anymore. This is where the household name “astroturf” comes from.
Fast forward to now, and the technology involved in making artificial turf means that its benefits for use in everything from corporate environments to schools and from sports fields to indoor gardens simply cannot be disputed.
Artificial grass is non-toxic and non-allergenic. So it won’t give you a rash when you come into contact with it, and it won’t make you sneeze when you lie down on its soft fibers. It’s safe for your family as it requires no pesticides or herbicides.
It’s durable, long lasting, and it obviously doesn’t require any watering! So it’s kind on your pocket too. Research suggests that it will also increase the value of your home.
There are a few tricks when it comes to artificial grass protection. Professional installation is the first step you should take if you want to preserve the lifespan of your synthetic turf.
Practical care tips for protecting your artificial grass include:
Use of the correct synthetic turf paint is crucial when it comes to applying your synthetic turf correctly. You’re looking for durability – but also removability – should you need to remove your grass carpet.
The right synthetic turf paint for the surface of your artificial grass is acrylic paint. Let’s say you need to mark out the lines of a sports field: using white acrylic paint will do the job. A product like PAINT OFF is a paint remover that will get rid of the lines after a bit of a soak and a scrub should you wish to remove the markings at some stage.
One of the downsides that we haven’t yet mentioned is the inescapable fact that synthetic grass can get super hot in summer. Sure, you can hose down your ‘astroturf’ to keep it cool – but this will negate the savings that you’re making on your water bill.
Another consideration when it comes to deciding on whether artificial grass is for you is to look at the potential lawn space that you have and perhaps “hedge” your bets by using synthetic turf in some places and real grass in others. If there’s an easily manageable area of grass where the kids and pets like to play, keep it. If there’s an indoor garage that could double up as a putting green, go for it!
