Watering Your Yard in Winter? It’s Possible — and Here’s How
Posted on February 12th, 2018
Winter weather is cold, but it’s also very dry and can be quite damaging to plants that have been sucked dry by the winter winds. If your soil freezes over for the entirety of the winter season, it’s important to make sure that your lawn has received ample water before the freeze occurs. That way, it will be well-prepared to survive the dry weather. However, if your soil goes through periods of freezing and thawing throughout the season, you must make sure to continue to water your yard regularly, and here are some tips to show you how:
Take cues from the weather.
Nature has a way of watering through rain and snowfall, but if your yard has not received precipitation in quite some time it’s time to give it a good watering before the next forecasted freeze. Be sure to water deeply, allowing the roots to absorb plenty of water to hold them over until the next thaw.
Pay extra attention to new foliage.
Freshly planted trees and shrubs need special attention and care since their roots have not been well-established yet. Make sure to water young saplings as often as possible to keep them strong throughout the season.
Follow the rule of the thermometer.
Invest in a good outdoor thermometer and check it regularly. If you find that the temperature is below 40 degrees, it’s best to put off watering until it rises back above that mark.
Water as early as possible.
The earlier on in the day that you water your yard, the better, especially during the winter months. This allows the roots time to absorb the water during the day before temperatures drop and freezing becomes a higher possibility at night.
Don’t over-water.
For well-established plants, watering once or twice a month should suffice. Remember that the roots will not absorb water as quickly as they typically do during growing season.
