While lawn care traditionally entails lawn mowing, fertilizing, weeding and the like, we sometimes tend to forget that maintaining our trusty lawn care tool is also part of the package. After all, without lawn care tools landscape maintenance would be extremely difficult. Just imagine opening your shed or garage next spring to pull out your lawnmower, only to find that it refuses to start due to rust, deterioration and gunk build-up. It’s time to winterize your lawnmower
Now, imagine knowing that if you’d only taken the proper precautions before storing it away in the fall you wouldn’t be in such a pickle.
Avoid that unnecessary headache in the future by following these simple steps to store your lawnmower safely during this season:
Skipping this step can cause gunk to form in your lawn mower’s carburetor – an open invitation for rust to take hold.
Before you carry-on with your winterization plan, you must disconnect the spark plug to avoid accidental injury while working on the lawn mower.
In addition to ensuring a nice sharp blade come spring, this will make it easier for you to drain the oil and clean the undercarriage in later steps.
Undrained oil can really gum up the works if left to sit for a long period of time. Make sure to have a tarp and oil pan handy to catch the oil as it drains from your mower.
Give the undercarriage a good cleaning, scraping away any caked on grass or mud with a putty knife. Once you’ve finished cleaning, reattached the blade.
A clean air filter ensures your mower will burn gas as efficiently as possible. While you’re changing the filter, clean off any debris from the cooling fins as well.
Before storing your prepared lawn mower, don’t forget to attach a new spark plug so your lawn mower is good as new in the spring.
