The flowers, shrubs, and bushes that sit around your home add an element of beauty to your property. However, when winter arrives, many of them will die until the beginning of next spring. Delicate flowers such as the hybrid tea rose, are one of the many plants that will need some protection for this coming winter. Check out these tips on how to preserve roses and other flowers this winter.
Trimming the Flowers
As soon as the ground begins to freeze, start trimming the roses so each cane is roughly 10’ to 12’ tall. Any canes that are weak looking or have a diameter that’s smaller than a pencil should be removed. All of the remaining ones should each have a couple of healthy bulbs on them.
Tidying the Yard
Now that the roses themselves are trimmed, remove any excess leaves so they are bare. Now it’s time to focus on the flowers’ surroundings by removing any fallen leaves around the plants. Allowing leaves, and other debris that may carry harmful organisms, to lay next to the flowers can inhibit its health and future growth.
Covering the Goods
The extreme temperatures of winter can sometimes be too much for these delicate roses to handle. That’s why homeowners should cover their roses with a plant cover. These plant covers will protect the flowers from harsh winds, cold temperatures, and snowfall. The mesh top will allow for proper airflow, but make sure to insulate the inside of the cover with materials like bark mulch. Some covers may have to be anchored down, which can be easily done with a brick on each side.
Having vibrant and beautiful plants surround the house can make any home look more appealing and attractive. So it’s important to take care of them — especially right before winter!
