Whatever you do, don’t be the homeowner that only focuses on their property during the warmer months. Tending to your property during the winter is just as important to ensure that it’s healthy and good looking in the spring and summertime. Throughout the winter, make sure you’re checking these specific things off on your landscaping list.
Proper Pruning
Taking the time to prune your property’s shrubs and plants during the winter will promote healthy growth during the spring. While pruning, make sure you are making swift and clean cuts about ¼ inch from the branch. Jagged cuts or ones too close to the branch can damage the plant, resulting in lackluster growth next season. For some shrubs and bushes, consider wrapping them in burlap to protect them from frost and snow.
Checking Trees
Plants and shrubs aren’t the only things that need to be inspected and pruned this winter. Weak or broken tree branches should be properly cut down. This will help to prevent further damage to the tree, nearby power lines, and your home. Before cutting too much off of the tree, consult with an arborist or landscaping specialist so you can have a plan of attack.
Assessing Accessories
Once all of the shrubs, plants, and trees have been taken care of, it’ll be time to move onto everything else that occupies your property. Make sure to clear all walkways, driveways, and patios of any water, snow, and ice. These wintery conditions mixed with cold temperatures can cause concrete and brick to crack or shift. Also, take a walk around your property and make sure external faucets are cleared of accessories and are covered.
Turning a blind eye to your property during the wintertime is a surefire way to discover a heap of problems when spring rolls around.
