Pruning your trees, bushes and other shrubbery before blooming season is very important to keep them growing strong and healthy each year. Generally, most shrubs require pruning both before and/or the winter months to make sure they’re prepared and rejuvenated for spring growth. If you’re planning to prune soon, here are some of the do’s and don’ts to keep in mind to make your pruning session a success this season.
Do make sure you time your pruning perfectly. Shrubs that flower in the spring and summer should be pruned in late winter.
Don’t be fooled into thinking that pruning is only done for unhealthy plants. While your shrubs and trees might be growing well, pruning them will only make them healthier!
Do makes cuts at a 45-degree angle for quick healing and growth, but don’t leave more than ¼ inch of growth above the last bud.
Don’t remove more than ⅓ of the plant’s entirety within a year’s time.
Do feel comfortable clipping away old branches all the way down to the base to make room for new, healthy growth.
If your bush is lopsided, do prune branches with buds pointing in the direction that you’d like to see fill out more.
Don’t forget to use thinning cuts to handle severely lopsided bushes first.
Do spread out thinning over the course of a few years for older, tangled bushes. Slow and steady makes the most progress!
