Fact: it’s never too early to prepare your garden for spring! Despite it being cold outside, with some potential snow on the ground, there are a plethora of ways to get the ball (or boulder) rolling! If you’re excited to bring your garden back to life or want to start your very first garden, then here are some helpful garden preparation tips to follow:
Before planting the first seed, it’s important to map out your garden completely. Of course, this doesn’t have to be a very detailed diagram — but you could do that if you please. When planning your garden, the most important aspect is to think about proximity and space. If you place your garden in the middle of your lawn, will that become an obstruction, or will it work out perfectly? Before solidifying your garden space, you must ask yourself questions like this to avoid any potential problems down the road. The best place to start a garden is off to the side on your property, since it will be out of the way and can be sectioned off if needed.
After you establish where you’ll place your garden, the next crucial step in the process is to decide what types of plants you’ll grow. From tomatoes to sunflowers, the possibilities are completely endless. If you’re looking to start a vegetable garden, then you’ll need to select which veggies you’ll grow and if they’ll be able to endure the environment you’re growing them in. Additionally, when selecting vegetables to grow, you’ll have to do some “homework” and see which plants can grow together and which will work against each other. Now, if you plan on having a traditional garden (i.e. flowers, shrubs, etcetera), then it’s important to select plants that will be able to withstand the temperature changes and that will ultimately work together. No matter what type of garden you choose to have, we know that it will be simply stunning!
Before the arrival of spring, it’s important to purchase all pertinent materials for your garden. Starting with the essential tools, make sure you have a sturdy hand trowel and a trusty digging shovel — since these will be extremely helpful throughout the planting process and season. Once you have acquired these materials, it’s then important to purchase the main product: the seeds! Depending on the type of garden you’re planning, seeds will play a huge role — since some of these plants can’t be purchased pre-grown at your local home improvement store. When purchasing seeds, there are a variety of helpful websites that simplify the process and will even include growing/care tips with purchase. It’s truly a win-win situation and gets you prepared for your spring garden in no time!
