Have you decided to add some new plants to your garden recently? Before you go ahead and begin planting, make sure the soil is loose and ready to be planted in. The easiest way to loosen up your garden’s soil is by using one of these many gardening tools.
Hoes
One of the most popular tools for preparing your soil is the garden hoe. This tool will allow you to loosen, cultivate, and weed the soil on your property. Depending on your needs, the hoe comes in a variety of shapes, sizes, and models (oscillating, warren, collinear).
Pickaxe
For those with a property that is filled with rocky, clumpy soil and tree roots that are all over the place, a pickaxe can help you break everything up. Any large clod, rock, or obstruction in your way can easily be demolished a simple swing from the hoe-like blade on this garden tool.
Rake
Everyone probably has a plastic or wooden rake already in their garage or shed, which is not only great for collecting leaves but also for spreading lightweight mulch around. However, there are also steel rakes designed to break up soil, leveling out the ground, and even constructing raised beds.
Spade/Shovel
A spade is basically a squared-off shovel that is thin enough to be considered a blade. It does a great job with cutting through sod, any obstructions, and loosening the soil. Like a shovel, the spade can also be used for cutting into hard ground, digging, and creating new beds and borders.
Trowel
This specialized hand-shovel is perfect for gardeners with small gardens or who are loosening soil in a particular spot. Once the soil is ready for planting, you can use the trowel to dig small holes to place the seeds, bulbs, or young plants. You can also use this small hand-shovel to dig up and remove unwanted weeds.
A master gardener should always have the right tools available at all times, and these tools are perfect for prepping your soil for planting.
