April is coming to a close and this season’s lawns and gardens are officially beginning to grow and bloom. Now that all of the spring prep has been taken care of, it’s time to move onto the next stage of lawn care and gardening. Here are a few tips you should follow during the end of April and beginning of May.
Prune Summer Shrubs
At the end of winter, you were out in your yard pruning away most of your plants and shrubs. However, if you have any summer shrubs like the hydrangea, butterfly bush, summersweet, or summer flowering spirea, now is the time to prune them. Pruning now will lead to intense stem growth during the summer and early fall when they begin to flower.
Check the Soil
By now you are champing at the bit to move some of your plants and bulbs from their planters to the outdoor garden. Before you can do that you must first check the soil to see if it is dry enough. You don’t want to dig and work your soil while it’s wet because it will eventually dry into hard chunks. Test your soil by grabbing a handful and squeezing it together. If the soil easily crumbles you can begin tilling; if the soil doesn’t crumble then you should wait a few more days and try again.
Stimulate the Lawn
Grab your lawn rake (not the garden rake) and begin raking the lawn to remove dead grass blades and other debris. Doing this quick and easy chore will help stimulate your lawn for faster growth during the spring and summer months. If your lawn sustained some damage and possible snow mold this past winter, raking it can help it recover and get back on track for healthy growth this season.
The month of May is fastly approaching, so make sure you accomplish these lawn and garden tips before the growing season really gets going!
