From afar, deer are beautiful creatures that look just as peaceful as they do harmless. Unfortunately, they only look harmless and are a common pest in neighborhoods throughout the country. Before this tick-infested mammal eats all of the plants in your garden, make sure you try these preventative methods.
Add More Plants
When you’re planning the blueprint for your garden, make sure you include two types of plants to scatter throughout your property. Lavender will deter deer from coming near your prized plants and vegetables because its scent is too strong. The aroma will remain on their legs, interfering with their ability to sense predators and to sniff out food they like to eat. Marigolds are another plant to consider as deer do not view them as a pleasant plant to eat.
Stink It Up
If you’re not looking to plant lavender or marigolds in your garden, opt to go the smelly route. Mix together 1 cup of milk, 1 egg, 1 tablespoon of organic dish soap, and water in a gallon jug. Pour some of this into a spray bottle and give your plants a shower of stinkyness. This concoction won’t hurt your plants, but it may make them smell less flower-like. To avoid smelling this scent in the hot sun, spray down your plants after the sun goes down.
Turn the Volume to 11
Deer are easily frightened creatures and you can use this to your advantage. Since you won’t be patrolling your property 24/7, you’ll need a small security system to do the job for you. Simply string some empty cans, pie tins, or CDs around the area of plants and flowers you would like to protect. The movement and sounds of these objects are unfamiliar to deer and will more than likely scare them away.
Having a family of beautiful deer in your yard may seem like a positive – until they start eating every plant in your garden.
