What You Need to Be Doing to Your Backyard
Posted on April 18th, 2017
How impressed were you with your lawn and garden from last year? If the answer is “not very”, then it’s time to step up your yard game. Spring into summer with these five things you need to be doing in your backyard!
- Pickup Seeds – Get in the car, buckle your seatbelt, and head on down to your local nursery to pick up this year’s crop of seeds. Pick out your favorite annual flowers, vegetables, and plants. If you’re looking to have early bloomers in your garden this year, be sure to incorporate your favorite perennials.
- Start Planting Your Veggies – For all of the vegetables that you plan on planting this season, now is the time to start sowing them indoors. Plant them in their separate pots, place them by a window that gets a large amount of sunlight, and remember to water them regularly. This way they can get a head start before eventually transferring them into your garden.
- Water, Water, Water! – Congratulations — you’ve planted your first set of flowers, plants, and vegetables! Once they’re in the ground, be sure to water them, allowing the water to fully soak in, and then water them again so the soil is completely saturated with water.
- Aeration – Between the mounds of snow that were piled on your lawn this past winter and the kids running around endlessly for hours, there are some areas of your lawn where the grass is compacted. Your lawn will need to be aerated, which involves piercing small holes into the ground. This will allow your lawn to breathe and take in the necessary oxygen, nutrients, and water it needs in order to grow.
- Weed Control – In order for your lawn to be free from weeds this year, this issue must be addressed before the growing season gets underway. Proper weed treatment should be done before the first one decides to sprout its ugly head. For those trying to tackle their weed problems during the summer months — what were you doing all spring?
Spring is the season where you need to get all of your lawn and garden preparation and maintenance done now so you can enjoy the summer!
