Do you picture yourself as half gardener, half amateur chef? A great way to channel both of your hobbies is to grow yourself an organic herb garden. This way you’ll be able to keep your thumb green and your dishes flavorful!
Decide What Tastes Best – Before you create your organic garden, do some research on which herbs are the tastiest according to you! Opt for herbs that are not only your favorite but those that taste the best when they’re freshly picked. Some herbs include basil, mint, and cilantro — yum!
Seeds vs Plants – Next up is deciding if you want to purchase seeds or plants that are just beginning to sprout. If you only want a small organic garden with maybe one plant per herb, go ahead and purchase the baby plants. However, if you’re planning on a bigger garden, it’s cheaper to go the seed route.
The Right Type of Soil – Creating your organic garden by planting all of the seeds and plants in the garden out back can be risky. A normal garden might have soil that becomes too compacted which can hinder herb growth. Instead, purchase organic potting mix to give your herbs the best chance for proper growth (spend on the right soil, skip on the fancy containers).
Cut and Plant Often – Many herbs like basil and cilantro will die after they flower. To make sure you always have a steady inflow of these herbs, plant new seeds every couple of weeks. While the new seeds grow, cut the tips of the shoots frequently so they can grow and remain productive for as long as possible.
Save, Save, Save – When you finally call it quits for planting new seeds for the season, hold onto all of the extras. Seeds purchased in packets can usually last up to two years so they’ll be fine to plant next year. Seeds that have recently set from a plant in your garden can be collected and placed in envelopes. Just mark the date you collected them and store them in a dry, dark room at room temperature.
After you’ve taken care of your lawn and garden, spend some time on a small garden that can be used to satisfy your taste buds!
