The last month of winter is very fickle — one day it’s sunny and warm, the next it’s snowing and freezing. While the weather conditions might not feel like spring is near, it’s closer than you think! In order to prepare your lawn for this year’s growing season, make sure you do these 5 things to your property.
- Quick Inspection – Once the weather is tolerable, head outside and see what you’re working with. Assess the condition of the lawn, trees, surrounding plants, and the soil. Remove any dead or broken off leaves, branches, and debris from the yard and garden.
- Rake It Up – Once all of the snow and ice has melted away from your lawn, grab your lawn rake and begin raking it. Doing this will open up your lawn to more oxygen, allowing it to have a better chance to start growing back earlier. Don’t worry if your lawn is brown, it’s not dead — it’s just dormant.
- Weed Control – If your lawn has been susceptible to crabgrass in the past, now is the time for prevention measures. Once all of the snow has melted away, apply a pre-emergent crabgrass control. This should be done before the soil temperature becomes too warm and a few weeks before grass seed is applied.
- Trim Time – You want to make sure you trim all of the trees and shrubs before the growing season starts. Proper pruning and trimming will allow your plants to have healthy growth during the spring. Shrubs and bushes are easy to trim yourself, however, you might want to hire a professional for larger trees.
- Prep Your Tools – While you wait for the snow to melt and the temperatures to rise, make sure all of your gardening and lawn care tools are prepped and ready to use. Clean off and sharpen your lawn mower’s blades, clean and oil your shears and gardening tools, and begin purchasing all of the seeds you would like to plant this spring.
With winter FINALLY coming to a close, now is the time to prep your lawn for the upcoming spring season.
