Winter is almost a month from being over — finally! Now is the perfect time for you to start planning and prepping your lawn and garden for spring. By performing an end of winter maintenance on your property, you’ll be jump starting the growth of your plants for when the growing season does arrive.
Pruning Plants
Most of the plants, shrubs, and trees on your property should be pruned at the end of winter. Pruning plants will remove any dead branches, stems, and leaves that could inhibit growth during the spring season. To properly prune a plant, make a sharp, angled cut about a quarter-inch away from the parent stem or branch. The end of winter is the optimal time to prune since plants are still dormant.
Tips for Planning Your Garden
- If you’re planning on planting any bulbs this season, make sure to do that within the next few weeks. By planting these bulbs in potted planters and leaving them on the inside of your window sill, you can get a head start on your growing your garden.
- For those who like to grow their own food, now is the time to start figuring out which vegetable seeds you’d like to plant. By mapping out your garden, you’ll be able to see how much of each plant to grow and where to place them for this coming season.
- After you’ve done everything you can while you wait for spring to roll around, head into your garage or shed and grab all of your gardening tools. Use this time to sharpen, oil, and shine up each one of your handy little helpers.
Winter is abruptly coming to an end so you better make sure that your property is ready for the spring season.
