The Complete Guide To Fall Lawn Care

Posted on September 19th, 2016

The weather is cooling off, but that doesn’t mean it’s time to put your lawn care duties to rest just yet. Your lawn will continue growing throughout the fall, which means mowing and maintenance should continue as well. In fact, we suggest giving your lawn a little more TLC than normal this autumn — here’s how:

Dethatch and Aerate

Does your lawn have a thick layer of thatch? If so, it’s time to get to work! You want to make sure your grassroots can see sunlight so they’re able to suck up as much sun and nutrients as possible before winter falls. As a general rule, more than a half inch of thatch it too much.

Fill and Overseed

Once you’ve finished dethatching, it’s time to aerate. Aerating helps your lawn breathe better and allows young seedlings to take hold more effectively. After aerating you’ll want to overseed to thicken up your lawn, especially in spots that may have died off and thinned out in the heat of summer.

Get to Fertilizing

Make sure you spread a hearty fertilizer that can strengthen up your roots for winter. Just be careful not to fertilize over freshly seeded areas. This can cause young seedlings to burn and wither instead of growing tall and strong. For more fall fertilizing tiss, check out last week’s blog post!

Apply Pre-Emergent Weed Killer

Get a head start on spring weeds by applying pre-emergent in the fall. This will keep those pesky plants from germinating early on and stealing sunlight and nutrients from your freshly planted lawn.
