5 Must-Know Fall Fertilizing Tips
Posted on September 13th, 2016
Fall is for fluffy sweaters, falling leaves, football, and most importantly, fertilizing! Just how some animals store up nutrients before they hibernate for the winter, your lawn is looking to absorb as much energy as possible before going dormant during the cool season. Here’s how you can help ensure it’s well-nourished before the first cold front begins.
- Fill your spreader smartly. In fact, opt to fill it over concrete rather than over a grassy area. That way, you can rest assured knowing if you happen to spill, you won’t risk damaging your precious lawn.
- Follow directions diligently. The last thing you want to do is over-fertilize. While it may seem logical — more fertilizer = more growing power — this unfortunately isn’t the case. Read the label on your fertilizer bag carefully and cover your lawn accordingly.
- Clean up carefully. Not only do you want to keep excess fertilizer off your lawn, but off your spreader and other fertilizing equipment as well. Allowing fertilizer to sit on and unused spreader in between seasons can cause rust to form.
- Seal unused fertilizer up tightly. In order to save your unused fertilizer for the time around, you have to keep it far away from moisture. That means sealing the bag up nice and tight with duct tape, and storing it in a cool, dry area of the home.
- Step around seedlings safely. You don’t want to fertilize freshly seeded areas, or you’ll risk burning up your poor young seedlings. Instead, cover a freshly seeded area with a tarp before you set out to work with your spreader.
