5 Fall Lawn Care Steps to Take Now
Posted on September 6th, 2016
Football season is starting this week, which only means one thing — autumn leaves and fall temperatures are just around the corner! Is your lawn ready for the fall season? If not, taking these five steps now will help set your seasonal lawn care up for success.
- Keep that lawn mower going. Just because the weather starts to cool off doesn’t mean your lawn will cease to grow. Continuing to mow throughout the fall, lowering your blade height as the season comes to a close. Your last two cuts of autumn should be on the lowest setting to allow as much sunlight as possible to penetrate the roots before winter.
- Remove leaves and debris. Don’t wait until the leaves are everywhere. Instead, start raking and removing brush now. That way, you’ll have an easier time clearing the rest away later on. Plus, your lawn will be able to absorb as much sunlight as possible before winter comes.
- Start aerating and overseeding. Weeds aren’t germinating in the fall, which means less competition for your precious new grass blades to grow. Just make sure you aerate first to oxygen, water and fertilizer are more effective.
- Spread fertilizer for the future. After you’ve aerated and seeded, you’ll want to give your lawn a boost with a proper fertilization treatment. Fertilizing now will ensure your grass roots grow deep and strong to withstand the cool, winter weather ahead.
- Fight back against weeds. As we mentioned, seeds are not germinating in fall, which makes it the perfect time to take action. Typically, weeds are in an “energy-absorbing mode” in fall, which means they’ll gladly suck up herbicides you spray their way.
