Balance The Soil pH in Your Yard
Posted on August 24th, 2016
As F. Scott Fitzgerald once wrote, “life starts all over again when it gets crisp in the fall,” and we couldn’t agree more! Autumn is the perfect time to rejuvenate your lawn after the hot summer, and balancing your soil’s pH is a good place to start. Without a sturdy soil foundation, your newly spread seeds will not be able to grow, so here’s what you need to know.
Raising pH, Reducing Acidity
- Limestone: Acidic soil doesn’t stand a chance against a limestone application. Whether you use calcitic limestone or dolomitic limestone, both can help raise your soils pH and reduce its acidity. Applications come in both powdered and pelletized form, and are best used in conjunction with core aeration and avid watering.
- Wood Ash: If you’re looking for an organic alternative, a half inch layer of wood ash should do the trick. Just sprinkle it on top and mix it deep down into the soil. If you own a fireplace, this can be a great way to recycle otherwise useless ashes. The only downside is that in order for these applications to work you’ll need to be patient and keep at it for several years.
Lowering pH, Balancing Alkaline
- Sulfur: Looking to take your basic level pH to acidic heights? Sulfur is the most common application of choice. It’s cost-effective, safe, and easy to apply.
- Sphagnum Peat: If an organic option is more up your alley, try working two inches of sphagnum peat into your soil. Not only will this raise the pH, but it will help increase water retention so your new seedlings are more likely to prosper.
- Acidifying Fertilizer: Feed and balance all in one! Some fertilizers contain ammonia, urea or amino acids, which can raise your soil’s pH over time.
- Mulch/Compost: For the cheapest, most eco-friendly alternative, turn to your compost pile. As organic matter breaks down, it releases chemicals that can naturally acidify soil.
