7 Deadly Dangers of an Unkempt

Posted on August 10th, 2016

Watch out! An unkempt lawn can be a dangerous place to play, relax and even maintain. It may seem silly, but the truth is that a poorly manicured lawn can harm, and in extreme cases, even kill you! Here’s how:

  1. Tall grass is a “ticking” time bomb. Blood hungry ticks can be found all over outdoors, but are more likely to take refuge in tall brush. Not only do their bites pack a pretty powerful and extremely itchy punch, but they can also be host to a ton of deadly bacteria and disease.

  1. Wild mushrooms are not a toy. Sure, most mushroom species are harmless and some even edible, but then there are those that are poisonous. While most adults wouldn’t even dream of chowing down on a wild mushroom, curious children might not be so hesitant!

  1. Snakes may lurk in the shadows. Although the New England area is not known for its poisonous snakes, that doesn’t mean they’re not out there! Failing to keep your lawn care promises can create a nice, shady habitat for slithery critter — of both garden and deadly variety.

  1. Pet poop can kill you. This one isn’t so much about mowing or growing your lawn as it is maintaining it. Not only does failing to clean-up after your pet make for a messy situation, but it can also lead to health complications for your family. Roundworms are often found in dog feces and can easily take up residence in your lawn, just waiting for someone in your family to infect.

  1. Pest control solutions can be sickening. While pest and weed control are necessary, be careful when and where you apply repellant. Ingesting pesticides and herbicides can be very dangerous, especially for pets and small children. When in doubt, consider an organic solution instead!

  1. Dry grass is fire’s best friend. If you live in a heavily wooded area, the prospect of a brush fire is not all that far-fetched. Unfortunately if your lawn is dried out, it will catch fire more easily, potentially spreading the flames right up to your doorstep!

  1. Lawn mowing can be risky. Pulling out the lawn mower once in awhile is not the only thing you have to keep an eye on when it comes to lawn care. Making sure your lawn is clear of rocks, twigs, toys and other debris first can prevent unnecessary trips to the hospital from ricocheted object. As such, you should always wear long pants and protective eyewear when you mow.
