Your Guide To Summer Garden Maintenance

Posted on August 2nd, 2016

Sure, the spring and fall are known for being high-time to garden, but don’t discount the summer months just yet! There are plenty of ways to maintain your mid-summer garden and encourage it to flourish in the seasons to come.

Pinch Flowers – The warm weather and sunny conditions can set your plants off on a growth spurt, so make sure you capitalize! If your herb garden is flourishing, make sure you’re pinching off the flowers as you see them start to bloom. Allowing them to fully bud will make your basil and oregano bitter and tougher to eat.

Plant in Succession – Have your summer fruits and veggies all been harvested for the season? If so, it’s time to consider some succession planting for the fall. Planting your spring crops again in late summer can set you up for a full harvest come autumn.

Watch for Pests – Giant japanese beetles, grasshoppers, powdery mildew and squash bugs are just a few of the insects that may be invading your garden. Keep an eye out for any suspicious or particularly abundant bugs, and call out sister company, Pest Control Unlimited, should you need insect removal assistance.

Water Often – Summer sun can be trying on your lawn and garden. That’s why it’s so important to make sure your landscape is well-watered. As a general rule, most plants require about 1 inch of water per week. Remember to water the roots directly, and try to water as early in the day as possible.

Mow Higher – The taller your grass blades, the more easily they can protect their roots from sun damage and moisture evaporation. Keep mowing often, but make sure your blade is adjusted to leave grass longer than your typical autumn cut.
