5 Ways Reduce Summer Lawn Stress
Posted on July 28th, 2016
For us, the summer is a time for sunshine, spending time with family and friends and lots of carefree fun in the sun. For our lawns however, not so much! The hot, dry summer conditions can have your lawn feeling pretty stressed, which can ultimately lead to irreversible damage if not attended to. If you notice your lawn is having a hard time handling the heat this summer, here are five ways to relieve the stress.
- Keep off the grass. Walking on dry grass can cause it to become matted down and damaged, so it’s best to avoid heavy foot traffic whenever possible. On the flip-side, frolicking through freshly watered grass can be detrimental as well, as it can cause your soil to become compacted.
- Prep your mower. When it comes to adjusting your lawn mower blades for the season, the higher the better. Set your mower to just trim a little off the top, leaving your grass blades nice and long. The longer the blade, the better it will be able to extend its roots and shade its soil from the hot sun.
- Sharpen your blades. Make sure your mower blades are nice and sharp, so they don’t shred your grass and disrupt water retention. When you shred your grass blades, they can’t hold water and turn brown — not a good look for your lawn!
- No more fertilizer. You know that feeling when you’re just so stressed that you can’t even think about taking a single bite of food? Well, your lawn feels the same in summer. Don’t waste fertilizer. Wait til the weather settles before you feed instead.
- Water nice and early. Watering your lawn before the the hot, heat rolls in can help it retain more moisture. Stick to a 6-10 a.m. watering timeframe to reduce the risk of evaporation. This also allows your lawn plenty of time to absorb and dry off before nightfall, which minimizes the chance for fungus to take hold.
