We’ll admit it — not everyone has a green thumb. Fortunately you don’t always need one to make sure your lawn and garden are properly maintained. If you’re making any of these common gardening mistakes, stop today and start greening up both your thumb and your landscape!
Skipping the soil test. Stop right there! Before you even think about planting a single seed, you absolutely must make sure you know your soil first. Not only is its pH level important, but its overall composition is as well. Soil type determines seed type, as well as seedling care. Remember, your soil can vary depending where in your yard you test, so make sure to spot test multiple areas.
Watering from top to bottom. Leaves get water from the roots, so you don’t necessarily have to worry about spraying them down during maintenance. Instead of watering from overhead, try to focus your efforts on the base of the plant and the soil surrounding it. That way, water will me more likely to make its way down to the roots.
Writing off a compost pile. Don’t knock it til you try it! Composting in environmentally friendly, can save you money, and helps your garden succeed. Why not give it a go? The natural nutrients in composted soil help rejuvenate your plants in a way that normal fertilizer just can’t.
Forgetting to mulch. Think of mulch as a free insurance policy for your plants. Without adding this protective layer, your soil will have a hard time retaining water and your roots will be more vulnerable to the elements. Plus, mulch can be packed with necessary nutrients as well.
