5 DIY Backyard Games for the Whole Family
Posted on July 19th, 2016
If there’s one thing we know for sure, it’s that summer days are best spent enjoying the great outdoors with friends and family! Be it a barbecue, a birthday party, or just a Saturday afternoon in the sun, setting aside time to enjoy your own backyard can help you make the most the summer season. To help, we’ve scoured the internet to compile a list of five of our favorite DIY backyard games that the whole family can enjoy.
- Turf Twister – Just like the old fashioned classic, but better! Just grab your favorite colors, cut a circular stencil out from an old pizza box and spray on your board. Just remember to use contractor-grade marking spray instead of traditional spray paint. That way, you can make sure to preserve your lawn.
- Jumbo Jenga – Looking for a way to repurpose those wood scraps lying around your tool shed? Turn your two-by-fours into gigantic Jenga pieces. You can even paint the ends to add a pop of color, but make sure you get out of the way when the tower topples over!
- DIY Dominoes – Much like Jumbo Jenga, this version of dominoes features oversized playing pieces, and offers another option for recycling wood scraps. With a little bit of wood stain, some adhesive dots and a good wood sealant, you’ll be in business — with the whole yard as your playing field!
- Picture-Perfect Pictionary – Grab some plywood, a few two-by-fours and some chalk paint and let’s get started! Simply paint the plywood with a nice, thick coat of chalk paint and frame with some brightly painted two-by-fours. Then, hang your oversized chalkboard over the fence, or on the shed and start playing pictionary! Make sure to have plenty of chalk available for players to draw with — add a hook and bucket to the side of the frame perhaps?
- Blacket Races – This one works well for large family gatherings in a nice, open yard, and requires little-to-no preparation! All you need is a stack of old linens and at least 4-6 players. Players will pair up in teams. One will sit on the blanket and hold on, while the other runs them from one side of the yard to the other. Then they’ll switch spots and run back toward the finish line.
What do all of these awesome outdoor games have in common? They need a nice, fresh lawn underneath them to be played to perfection! If you’re having trouble getting your lawn to reach it’s maximum potential, allow Turf Unlimited to have a go.
