There’s no doubt about it, water is one of the most important elements when it comes to growing and maintaining nice green landscape. Unfortunately, water also comes at a pretty hefty price — to both your wallet, and the environment. To minimize cost, here are some water-smart tips to employ as you water your yard this season.
Know your zones. Not all corners of the lawn are created equal. Knowing which spots are sunny and which are shady can help you determine where you need to water the most. That way, you won’t waste money over-watering. Remember to reassess your zones every season!
Be familiar with your soil. What type of soil does your yard contain? It’s texture will have a direct correlation to its ability to soak up and retain water. For example, if you’ve got sandy soil, chances are you’ll be watering more often than if you’ve got clay soil.
Get rid of weeds. Weeds are not only unappealing to the eye, but they can compete with and steal water away from your grass and other garden plants. Make sure to apply herbicides and remove existing weeds before, during and after the growing season.
Keep turf to a minimum. If possible, try to incorporate some concrete or patio space in your yard. While we love grass, having less of it to maintain means you’ll use less water to do so.
Plant smart. Keep your plant types and preferences top of mind when adding new greenery to your landscape. If you’ve got a shady spot or a spot that’s often less hydrated, group plants that thrive in those types of conditions. That way, you can keep your watering segmented.
Be mindful of the rain. If it pours, use that to your advantage! There’s no sense in watering your lawn when mother nature has already done it for you. In addition, try catching some of that rainwater in barrels and reusing it for watering at a later date — free water!
