Tips for Planting Summer Trees

Posted on June 24th, 2016

Regretting not planting in the spring? Regret no more; summer is a great time to start! With proper care and preparation, planting in the summer can be done effectively, making your summer trees as fruitful as ever. Let’s take a look at some tips that make summer planting easy:

Keep an eye on your leaves.

Hot summer days may prompt the question: “When should I water my trees?” The story is written in the plant itself! By simply looking at the leaves, you can tell whether it’s time to water or not. If you see they’re turning a light shade of brown or have started to curl, it means your tree is dry.

Watch out for over-watering.

You may be tempted to compensate for dry trees by over-watering, but this can be just as harmful as under-watering. Start slow, by watering lightly, but keep up with it! Check daily and increase the amount of water you give your trees if the above problems persist.

Choose the perfect location.

Make sure that the spot you choose to plant your new foliage is an area that is heavily exposed to sunlight. Don’t tuck it in a corner; let it catch a tan! Proper placement for a tree not only helps your landscape look great, but it keeps your tree healthy as well.

Make use of mulch.

A great remedy for moisture retention is mulch. Spread a 3-inch layer around the base of your trees will help keep them hydrated. Mulch also serves to beat weeds growing near the foliage that soak up nutrients. So mulch up! Your tree will thank you.

Don’t turn and run from the idea of planting in the summer. Believe it or not, the summer can really be a great time for planting. Just add these tips to your tree and shrub care routine and you and your trees will be as happy as ever!
