This is your lawn speaking, and the most stressful time of year is upon us! The heat and lack of rain makes me dry, brittle and more likely to become dull, matted, or worse — dead! I am supposed to be soft, beautiful and green, but that’s only if you take care of me. My life is in your hands!
Preserve Me
Like I said earlier, summer is a stressful time for us lawns. Please don’t make it more stressful by poking holes in me. Aerating is a big no-no for the summer because I’m so dry that it could cause my soil to crack. The spring is a much better time to aerate, so if you missed the boat this time around, hold off until next year.
Feed Me
I am a Massachusetts lawn, one of the best in the country, might I add. We have decent annual rainfall numbers so feeding me a little extra in the summer is okay. My pals out in California and Arizona have a tougher time, so I am just blessed to have been sprouted in this fine state. I am not picky, any basic lawn fertilizer will work. Just test it out on a small patch first to make sure it’s a good fit.
Water Me
I get dehydrated just like you would if you were out in the hot summer sun all day. The difference is, you’ve got an air conditioned home to retreat to. If you want me to look nice, remember that I’m particularly parched in the morning and when that sun goes away at night. If I drink in the middle of the day all of that water just evaporates right into the air and away from my roots.
Protect Me
This is my turf and I don’t want these weeds moving in and cramping my style. Mowing me regularly is a start, but you should also be digging any invaders up by the roots. Dandelions will come out easy, but you might need the round up for the clovers and daisies. This yard isn’t big enough for the both of us!
