Nothing ruins a lush green lawn quite like a weed infestation, which is why it’s so important to keep an eye out for first signs. Unfortunately, some weeds are sneakier than others and are able to blend in and fool unsuspecting homeowners more easily. The four common backyard weeds below are a great example.
Dandelions – Don’t let their beautiful yellow hues or soft, fluffy appearance fool you! While dandelions might be pretty to look at, they’re actually a weed not a flower. Your best line of defense is a thick, healthy lawn and a good post-emergent herbicide. While penetrating the root is the only way to get rid of these once and for all, plucking their blooms can prevent them from spreading for the time being.
Crabgrass – It’s stiff, tall and taking over your lawn patch by patch. Sounds to us like your yard has caught a case of crabgrass. This weed grows in thick patches and mimics the look of grass blades, just thicker and more straw-like in texture. To prevent crabgrass, make sure not to over or under water your lawn, and be careful not to mow it too short. Your best defense is some pre-emergent herbicide, but you should consult with your local lawn care professional or garden center to get timing just right for your region.
Dutch Clover – Similar to dandelions, this weed boats an adorable white bloom that might be mistaken for a flower by the lawn care novice. Dutch clover thrives in poor soil that lacks nitrogen. Boosting your soil’s nutrients can help get rid of it, but it will definitely take some time.
Oxalis – Remember digging through the yard for lucky four leaf clovers as a kid? While you may have been having a blast, you probably didn’t realize that you were actually frolicking around in the weeds! Oxalis is most easily identified by its clover shaped, green leaves and small yellow flowers. It can grow in both dry or moist soil, and is commonly seen in patchy grass or growing through gravel and mulch. A broadleaf herbicide works best for defending against this weed, but it’s a tricky one to conquer completely.
