7 Superb Lawn Fertilizing Tips That Work
Posted on May 31st, 2016
Fertilizing your lawn correctly can make a world of difference. Unfortunately, it’s not always as easy as it appears. That’s why we’ve compiled a list of the seven best practices to help you complete your seasonal fertilizing task and boost your lawns curb appeal.
- Spread wisely. The best way to make sure your fertilizer is evenly dispersed is by using a broadcast or rotary spreader. As you push your spreader back and forth across the lawn, make sure to overlap your tracks slightly so no spot is unreached.
- Water well. Give your lawn a thorough watering one or two days prior to fertilizing, then allow the grass to dry. After applying your fertilizer, don’t forget to water once more to make sure the product reaches the soil.
- Aerate often. The best time to fertilize is just after aeration. Aerating your soil allows your grass roots to be exposed, making them more likely to soak up and benefit from the fertilizer.
- Go natural. If you’re not fond of chemical compounds, stick to old fashioned fertilizing — with your grass clippings. Simply redistribute your clippings back onto the lawn after each mow. But remember, this can only provide up to 25% of your lawn’s necessary nutrients.
- Compost. If you’re trying to keep lawn care as organic as possible, follow up your grass clippings with some homemade, composted fertilizer. Just make sure you don’t overdo it!
- Plant clover. Just like compost, clover can help provide the nitrogen necessary to nourish your soil. They can also help prevent common lawn disease and can repel lawn grubs.
- Time it right. If you live in a warmer climate, chances are you’ve growing warm-season grasses. For these, fertilizing in the late spring or early summer is crucial. However, in areas like Massachusetts and New Hampshire, cool-season grasses are dominant, which require fertilizing in the fall and sometimes spring.
