Is Your Yard Ready for the Summer?

Posted on May 27th, 2016

Memorial Day Weekend marks the unofficial start to summer, and we couldn’t be more excited! If you haven’t gotten around to readying your yard for outdoor fun, there’s hope for you yet — and a few weeks left before summer officially begins!

Fertilize. First and foremost, you’ll want to make sure your lawn is properly fertilized so it can soak up all the summer sun. But beware, fertilizing too late in the season can be detrimental to your lawn.

Dethatch. You may want to aerate and dethatch as well if you’re seeing a lot of remaining dead grass from the cooler season. If dead grasses are left to clump and shade the soil new grass will be unable to grow.

Protect. You don’t want weeds to run rampant on your lawn, so applying a good herbicide is key — especially after fertilizing and dethatching. You want to make sure that the nice growing environment you created for your lawn is not taken over by the enemy!

Mow. Your grass needs consistent cuts to perpetuate growth. Make sure that your lawn mower is tuned up and ready to tackle the job. Just remember not to cut too short!

Mulch. Not only do you need to prepare your lawn, but your garden as well. After planting your annuals, make sure to apply a layer of mulch to keep weeds away and moisture in. You may even be able to create your own DIY mulch from your grass clippings.
