It’s about that time of the year where homeowners are ready for warm weather, and gung-ho about filling in bald spots to fluff up their lawn for the season. If you’re among the many that are excited to start seeding a new or existing lawn this year, we’ve got you covered with the most important items to consider when selecting grass seed.
Put your soil to the test. One of the most important factors that influences grass seed selection is the pH level of your soil. Either purchase a soil test kit from your local garden center, or hire a professional to determine its acidity level. Ideally, you’ll want results to be between 6-7.5 on the pH scale.
Determine your region’s climate. Different grasses favor different temperatures. In order to select the proper grass seed for your lawn, you must first determine whether to consider warm or cool season grasses. Warm season grasses require a ton of sun to survive, while cool season grasses are much more shade-tolerant — and abundant in the New England area!
Consider necessary durability. Will your kids be running rampant in the yard with water balloons and super soakers this summer? Does the dog frequent the yard to use the facilities? If so, you’ll want to choose a grass type that is as resilient to foot traffic as possible — like Kentucky bluegrass.
Think about hydration. Is your climate very dry, or does it rain often? Make sure the grass seed you select works well with the average humidity and precipitation levels in your area. For example, if water is scarcer in your region, selecting a drought-tolerant grass type would be best.
