Did you know that an average homeowner spends nearly 73 hours working on their lawn and landscape each year? With all of that effort, it’s no wonder you’ll want to take special care to avoid these costly lawn care mistakes!
Ignoring the basics. In order to properly care for your lawn, you first need to find out what type of lawn you’re cultivating! After all, it would be quite difficult to develop a watering, seeding and fertilizing plan without knowing which grass type you’re dealing with from the start. The best way to identify your grass type is by carrying a sample into your local garden center or speaking with a lawn care specialist.
Ditching mowing duties. Don’t let your lawn become overgrown and overtaken by weeds! Sticking to a strict lawn mowing schedule is crucial. Failing to cut your lawn once a week can result in tall, shaggy blades that are susceptible to weed growth, instead of those that grow long, luscious and strong.
Overdoing the fertilizer. We understand you’re anxious to fill in those gaps left behind by winterkill, but be careful! More fertilizer does not equal more grass growth. In fact, over fertilizing can actually minimize grass growth due to chemical burns. To get it right, make sure you read the packaging carefully before use and consider springing for the “slow-release” option instead.
Drowning it out. While it’s true that water is essential in fostering a lush green lawn, too much water can be detrimental as well — to both our lawn and your water bill! Among other things, overwatering heightens the risk of lawn disease, and can wash away important fertilizing nutrients. As a general rule of thumb, try to water deeply about once a week or consider installing an automatic sprinkler system to do the watering for you!
