5 Easy-Maintenance Flowers for the Gardening Novice

Let’s face it, not everyone has been blessed with a green thumb and maintaining a garden can certainly be difficult. However, while difficult, growing greenery in your home without a green thumb is not impossible! If you’re one of the many people that have a hard time getting your horticultural ducks in a row, here are a few low-maintenance plants you can consider.
- Astilbe – Add a pop of color to any outdoor area with this simple bright bloom. It’s flowers bloom in a tall plume of white, pink or red in the warmer months, and it’s thick leaves protect its roots from weeds. These flourish in partial shade and require regular watering.
- Lilacs – Fill those empty voids in your garden with some delicate, yet hardy lilac bushes. While most shrubs flower in white, pink or purple, there are a wide variety of other hybrids available. These bushes love sunny or partially shaded areas in warmer climates.
- Hydrangea – Depending on your soil, ‘endless summer’ hydrangea will either flower blue in acidic, or pink in alkaline. This plant landed on our list for its ability to bud on both new and old branches. That means, that you’ll never have to worry about it dying off for good!
- Rugosa Rose – Notable for their pest-free tendencies, these bright beauties can a dash of color to any landscape. While they prefer moist soil and flourish close to water, they can grow to be pretty drought tolerant over time. Their only request is a ton of bright sunlight!
- Goldenrod – Nothing says summertime sun quite like a patch of bright yellow blooms. These hardy plants will light a spark in any garden, plus they only require moderate watering. Make sure you don’t confuse these with their hay-fever bearing foe the ragweed!
