5 Tips For Backyard Composting
Posted on April 5th, 2016
One of the best ways to recycle materials and revive your yard is by creating a compost pile. Compost is rich in nutrients, which makes it perfect for planting new greenery and feeding your current landscaping. If you’re considering starting up your very own compost pile, here are some tips you might want to keep in mind.
- Keep The Scraps – Cooking can produce a ton of waste, but refrain from throwing it in the garbage as usual. Instead, grab a spare bowl and throw your shells, peels, and other scraps in as you cook. Adding these to your compost pile later on can boost nitrogen levels and help speed up the composting process.
- Bigger Is Better – Don’t be afraid to let your compost pile build. As long as it stays within the 3’x3’ range, you’re off to a good start. The larger the pile, the more heat builds, and the faster composting will take place.
- Aerate Often – Just like your lawn, your compost pile needs to be mixed up and aerated every once in awhile. Consider a tumbling compost bin, to help encourage oxygen to reach the inner-layers of your pile.
- Balance Moisture – While compost thrives on moisture, it’s important to regulate how much water your pile is holding. Too much will lead to a stinky, soggy pile, and too dry will lead to an ineffective compost.
- Have Variety – Make sure you include a healthy mix of materials within your compost pile. Include a good mixture of table scraps, leaves and grass clippings to keep your compost pile in balance.
Incorporating some hearty compost into your spring garden will most certainly pay off!
