Spring Cleaning 101: Start With Your Yard

Posted on March 24th, 2016

When it comes to early spring, three things come to mind: Spring showers, spring sunshine, and most importantly, spring cleaning. As you prepare your list of seasonal cleaning duties, make sure you don’t forget the most important place to start — your yard!

  • Get to pruning. Before you start clearing out debris on the ground, take this time to clip off any dead or damaged branches from your shrubs and trees. That way you’ll only have to pick up once. Cut back any overgrowth and reshape your shrubbery.
  • Divide and conquer. If you’ve got perennials beginning to bloom, go ahead and dig them up to re-disperse them more evenly. Dividing a crowded flower bed provides more spaces for sunlight to penetrate the soil.
  • Define your borders. Clear out any leaves, branches or debris that has fallen into your flowerbeds and around the base of your shrubbery. Remove old mulch and reestablish your flowerbed borders as you clean, leaving a crisp, defined divide.
  • Patch fences and paths. If you find that your paint is peeling, or your patio footing has loosened. Now is the time to powerwash, repaint and repair any damage.
  • Start seeding. Trim your lawn to a healthy height and prepare bare and damaged areas for seeding. A square, metal rake is a good tool for digging up damaged turf, and adding a layer of compost before seeding can expedite germination.
