How to Start Spring Lawn Maintenance Now

If you’re anything like us, you’re probably teeming with excitement to get down in the dirt this spring and start beautifying your yard once again. While spring has not truly sprung yet, there are still a few early season lawn care tasks that you can start to employ. Here’s what you need to know to help rebuild your lawn for the warm season, starting now.
- Let your soil rejuvenate. Before heading into any serious lawn maintenance tasks, make sure your soil has had a chance to thaw out. The best way to let your landscape reboot is by avoiding heavy foot traffic and avoiding raking, mowing or aeration until you’re certain it has dried.
- Get your lawn mower read. Sharpening your blades, changing the oil, and replacing spark plugs and filters are all perfect tasks for March. That way, your lawn mower will be up and running when it’s time for the first cut of spring.
- Test your soil’s pH levels. If you haven’t tested your soil in more than three years, the time to test is now. Whether you DIY or call a professional, testing your soil can help you determine which nutrients your lawn is lacking.
- Trim off the top. Once your lawn begins to grow and the soil has dried completely, give it a good, long cut to remove dead blades from the top. Just as you would get a trim to remove dead ends, your lawn needs a seasonal haircut to rejuvenate itself as well.
- Aerate and overseed bare areas. While the fall is typically the best time to seed for cool-season grasses, it is possible to seed in the early spring as well. This is a great way to bring those dead spots that succumbed to winter back to life.
