Get ready, because spring will be here in just 18 short days! That means preparing for your seasonal lawn maintenance tasks should be top of mind in the next month. To help you kick off your spring lawn care season, here’s what you need to know to get your lawn tools up and working after the long winter.
Tune them. The most important step to prep your lawn mower and other mechanical lawn tools for spring is to change any spark plugs and filters first. These are the key ingredients to help make your machines run smoothly.
Change the oil. Just like spark plugs and filters, without clean, fresh oil, your lawn mowers, weed whackers, and the like will not be able to function to their best ability. Be sure to drain out every ounce of old, dirty oil before refilling the tank with new oil — checking your owner’s manual first to select an oil type that performs best for your lawn tool.
Sharpen the blades. Many mechanical lawn tools are used to cut or trim away foliage, just like your lawn mower. For these types of machines, make sure to remove and sharpen any blades for the best results. If you find that your blades are too dull to sharpen, consider replacing them with a new set.
Clean it off. While you’ve got your lawn tools pulled apart for maintenance, you’ve got the perfect opportunity to really give them a good, deep clean. Remove any lingering debris, and wax over the tool to keep clippings and dirt from reattaching.
Oil it up. Just like all other things mechanical, keeping mowing parts going strong is important. To help nudge them alone, give your gears a good oiling. This will help things move smoother and continue working for longer.
