Although the autumn leaves might look pretty strewn about your yard, it’s important to take the time to remove them before they damage your landscape. We know it might not be your favorite fall task, but we promise it’s all worth it in the end. Here are a few of the raking do’s and don’ts to abide by when you hit the yard this weekend.
Don’t wait until it’s too late! As leaves pile up they shield your yard from the sunlight it needs stay strong and gear up for the winter. If they become wet from rain the damp, dark conditions will also make your lawn a breeding ground for mold and fungal disease.
Do rake often. The longer you wait, the more difficult the job will be. Try to stay on top of falling leaves by raking often in small portions.
Don’t forget to check drains. Leaves can become lodged in sewer drains or dry-wells, making your property more likely to flood, which can damage and waterlog your lawn.
Do keep mowing your lawn. Keeping your grass well-manicured will make it more difficult for leaves and debris to get stuck in your lawn.
Do consider mulching leaves. Instead of bagging your leaves and tossing them to the curb, why not use them to mulch your landscape?
Do check with your local municipality. Often times there are rules regarding when and how leaves must be removed and disposed of.
Don’t be afraid to call for help. Raking leaves is a very labor-intensive task that can be difficult for some. If you have trouble raking, or would rather have a hand, don’t hesitate to give a professional lawn care company a call.
