Top Leaf Raking Tips!
Posted on October 6th, 2015
As the leaves change colors, we all know what’s right around the corner: Leaf raking season! While raking leaves is not everyone’s favorite outdoor task, keeping your lawn well-manicured and free of debris is important to perpetuate healthy grass growth throughout the season and all year round. To help make your mandatory maintenance a little bit more bearable, we bring you some of the top leaf raking tips around.
- Choose your rake wisely. a sturdy rake with wide tines will allow you to collect the maximum amount of leaves with each sweep. If you’re prone to shoulder or back aches, try an ergonomic rake designed to reduce pressure with its bent handle.
- Slow and steady. Contrary to what you may have though, slow and small sweeping motions gather more leaves than larger ones. Plus, it’s a great workout for your arms!
- Sweep downwind. Make sure you’re not trying to rake against the grain, or your perfect piles will be blowing back across the yard.
- Give it time. Though it might be tempting to begin your raking regimen right when leaves begin to fall, your best bet is to wait until after the season peaks to avoid having to repeat raking over and over again.
- Stay protected. Wear long pants and sleeves to protect you from hidden pests, and work gloves to prevent blistering on your hands as you rake.
- Wait til it’s dry. Leaves are significantly heavier when they’re wet, so hold off working in the yard after a rainstorm. Instead, choose a cool, dry day to help you save time and energy.
- Try using a leaf blower. If raking is not your forte, a leaf blower can really do the trick. Just blow the leaves into one big pile, bag and be done!
- Make it a family affair! Raking up leaves is a big job, so enlisting some help is never a bad idea. After your kids are done playing in the autumn leaves, have them help you bag them up and move them to the curb.
Remember that before the brunt of autumn leaf-fall really hits, there are a few important steps you should take to prepare your lawn for the season.
