The warm seasons are over, which only means one thing… The time has come to begin preparing for next year! Autumn is a time for rejuvenation, as we’ll see even more clearly when the leaves begin to change and fall. The cool weather allows us the opportunity to get out there and take on some landscape maintenance tasks without the heat of the sun bearing down on our backs, so here are some great additions you can start making to your yard this season:
Tulips: Like most other spring blooms, tulips require a period of serene, cool dormancy to prepare for their seasonal sprouting. Planting tulips in the fall will ensure that the bulbs have enough time to mature and settle so that they’re ready to break free and bloom come next spring.
Pansies: Whoever says flowers are only a luxury of the spring and summer months has never planted a pansy before! These cool-season flowers perform best when planted at the beginning of fall, when the soil is still semi-warm from the summer sun.
Veggie Gardens: Just like flowers, there are many vegetables that prefer to grow in cooler temperatures. Planting plenty of broccoli, brussel sprouts, carrots, kale and other leafy greens can help you start stocking up for the winter early.
Turf: Fertilization and seeding are best practiced in the fall. The cooler climate and sunny days present the perfect opportunity for you to plant new grass and fluff up your existing lawn.
Trees & Shrubs: In autumn, temperatures are cool, but the soil is still warm which creates the ideal conditions for roots to develop and strengthen. However, it’s important that after planting yo make sure give your new shrubs and saplings plenty of water to keep them hydrated during the winter.
