What Are the Types of Grass in New England?

Posted on June 16th, 2015

As you may already know, there are tens of thousands of different species of grass sprouting across the globe every day. With so many options, choosing the correct type of grass for your yard is extremely important. Your decision should be mostly dependent on your region’s climate, as certain species are more prone to thrive in specific temperature zones than others. Here in the New England area, there are several grass species that are common among homeowners. Here’s all you need to know about the most predominant types of grass in New England:

Grassed question symbolKentucky Bluegrass – This grass species is among the most popular of the New England grasses, due to its ability to prosper in cooler climates. It’s light-to-dark green blades grow strong and sturdy, making this grass type long-lived. But beware, climates warmer than 75 degrees can stifle this grass’s growth.

Fine Fescue – It’s ability to thrive in dry, shaded conditions make this grass a good choice for New England homeowners. However, this grass type is not all that study, so it’s not recommended for areas of high-traffic. If you choose this grass species, you’ll have the option of picking from chewing fescue, hard fescue or red fescue, which are all a part of the fine fescue family.

Perennial Ryegrass – This grass species does well in a year-round mild climate and is able to handle cooler winters with little damage to your yard. Unlike the fescue family of grasses, this grass type prefers sunlight to shade. eHow suggests blending it with Kentucky Bluegrass for a strong, study grass blend, impermeable to high-traffic and harsh weather conditions.

Bentgrass – Also known as creeping bentgrass, this grass type is known for its heavy, matted down look, featuring glass blades with a smooth upper surface and a ridged lower surface. Like the other three grass types above, this species thrives in cooler temperatures, making it an excellent choice for homeowners in the New England area.
